Nas cinco incursões que fiz ao Parque Nacional do Itatiaia, esperei em vão por um encontro com esse imponente gavião. Não aconteceu. Grandes expectativas podem gerar grandes decepções. Neste dia, tomamos a estrada velha das torres e fomos até o seu ponto mais alto. Pegamos a trilha que subia e duas horas depois estavamos de volta ao ponto onde haviamos deixado a pickup. Estava absolutamente satisfeito com o resultado conseguido e nos preparavamos para guardar o equipamento e tomar o caminho de volta. Estávamos observando a parte alta de onde viéramos, quando vimos algo grande emergir da mata. Meu amigo João Sergio Barros, emérito conhecedor de aves de rapina, soltou um grito contido: Pega Macaco!!! A ave começou a circular, até que passou sobre nossas cabeças. Em suas idas e vindas ao local de onde surgira, trouxe consigo a fêmea, o que ajudou ainda mais a abrilhantar o show inesquecível daquele dia.
